Ramadan in Dearborn, Michigan is pretty lit- not just because Muslims decorate their homes with lights, but because the Ramadan Suhoor Festival takes place every weekend during the fasting month.
This year, the festival is expected to welcome over 100,000 people, said the event’s founder, Hassan Chami. He shares five reasons why Muslims in the US and Canada should head to the Great Lakes State to soak in the Ramadan Suhoor Festival vibes this year.
1) Support Muslim businesses
With over 60 food vendors and 18 merchandise vendors, there’s plenty of gastronomic choices for all taste buds. You can also get some Eid shopping done all in one place. No need to worry about cooking for your pre-dawn meal when you can simply purchase and support these vendors.
2) Community event for all- Muslims and non-Muslims
While terawih prayers at the mosque is a community event for Muslims, the Ramadan Suhoor Festival is a great space for everyone to meet and learn about Ramadan traditions. In many countries with sizeable Muslim populations, such bazaars or festivals are held month-long during Ramadan. Bringing a taste of this to the USA is something many will appreciate.
3) Create memories for your family
Besides food, there’s also Quranic recitation at the main stage. Children get to experience the excitement of Ramadan and immerse in a huge community event with beautiful light decorations and a festive atmosphere.
4) Support a great cause
Proceeds from ticket sales for the festival go to scholarships and charity. There will also be free raffles for umrah trips! Last year, over $200,000 was donated to The Amity Foundation. The proceeds also went towards over ten educational scholarships, among other charitable initiatives.
5) Special heaters to keep you warm
No need to worry about the weather as there are special heaters installed to keep attendees warm and cozy! A 55,000 sq- ft heated tent has been prepared for the comfort of attendees. There’s also an additional 45,000 sq- ft of an outdoor food truck park that has 18 trucks.
