The Healing Benefits of Travelling

by Hessy Trishandiani

Is there any memorable place that makes you always wanted to go back there? The place may seem ordinary to others, but it is a special place for you. It’s not only the place that makes you always want to come back, but also the journey to get there that you enjoy every second of.

Travelling or going on a trip for vacation is a really fun thing indeed. No wonder, ‘travelling for healing’ has become a popular term nowadays. But do you know where the term came from?

‘Healing’ became a popular term when Covid-19 pandemic hit all around the world. Everyone is struggling to cope with life pressures in different ways. Many people ended up experiencing mental fatigue and stress. In various limitations during the pandemic, many people tried to do healing/self healing.

Self healing can be done in various ways. Starting from the simplest thing, like making yourself feel at peace. You can also try meditating, exercising, reading, writing, having a me time, or travelling.

As for travelling, this activity is believed to have healing benefits. Travelling helps heal the soul, clear the mind, and open the heart. Its destinations are not limited. It could be somewhere in the middle of nowhere, on a deserted island with your loved ones, or travelling alone in a bustling big city.

So why is travelling considered as a way to heal?

Healing the Pain

Travelling to an area with beautiful natural scenery can actually relieve pain. A 2021 study by Rachel Buxton, researcher in the department of Biology at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and her several colleagues, studied the effects of nature sounds, including birdsong and the sound of the streams and its correlation on the mind and human pain.

The researchers found that the songs of nature have a positive effect on both ways – mind and human pain. It can improve health, increase positive impact, also reduce stress and distractions. The study’s findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Reducing Stress Level

A study published in the journal The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in 2018 shows that a four-day weekend vacation had a positive effect on self-recovery, reducing tension and stress for 45 days. This research also shows that someone who spends holidays away from home can decrease their tension level even better.

Reducing the Risk of Depression

A study from the Marshfield Clinic in Wisconsin found that women who go on vacation at least twice a year were less likely to suffer from depression and stress than women who go on vacation less than once every two years.

Self-Reflection

Travelling always awakens something in our self, especially when we travel alone. Being in an unfamiliar place with beautiful nature and a calm atmosphere encourage us to reflect upon ourself. Self-reflection during travelling allows us to appreciate the life we have lived until today, it also reminds us of the abundance of love we’ve got from people who sincerely loved us.

Expressing Gratitude Towards Allah’s Greatness

The beauty of nature that cannot be found everyday in our home makes us realize that Allah SWT’s might is really incredible. This also makes us more grateful because we can enjoy all the greatness from the Creator.

The kindness we can get from new people and strangers we meet during the trip can also be a reminder for us to treat others with the same kindness, wherever we are. And remind us to be grateful for every good thing in life. The more we express gratitude in our life, the more goodness will come back to us.
